Here are some examples of YWCA programs in Asia:

Centre for Hope and Healing, YWCA of Sri Lanka

A safe haven for women and children in a devastated region

The YWCA Sri Lanka is providing long term relief work following decades of civil war and the tsunami of December 2004.

Batticaloa, on the east coast of Sri Lanka, is in a region that has been devastated by both the war and the tsunami.  After the tsunami, the Sri Lankan YWCA's drop-in child care centre at Batticaloa, the "House of Hope," was converted to permanent quarters for 24 children who now live there, while others visit regularly for meals and support.

The centre is also now a home for young women separated from their families by the tsunami and /or civil war or escaping violent relationships. This centre is a safe haven for these women, who can access vocational training, microcredit and other support at the centre. The centre also runs a delicious bakery which supports its work.

Rumah Perlindungan Sosial, YWCA of Malaysia

A safe haven for women and children escaping domestic and family violence

In 1996, YWCA of Malaysia in partnership with the National Council of Women’s Organisations opened one of the few shelters in Malaysia for women escaping domestic and family violence.

The centre, called Rumah Perlindungan Sosial (RPS), provides holistic help for women, children and teenagers in crisis, including survivors of domestic and family violence and sexual assault survivors. The centre aims to empower women to take control of their lives.

The centre provides short-term emergency accommodation girls and women (and their children). The centre also provides counseling and arranges support services such as medical, legal, childcare and job placement where possible.

The centre also has a 'half-way house,' which is medium-term supported accommodation which assists women to develop the skills to live independently.
