Healthy bodies and healthy body image

Women and girls today are bombarded with unrealistic images of their bodies. Poor body image has become a serious problem amongst young people.

As well as helping develop physical health, YWCAs works directly with young people to build self-esteem, confidence and resilience about the way they see themselves.

Here are some Australian YWCA healthy bodies programs:

HEALING Aboriginal women's health and wellbeing program, YWCA NSW

A program to help build healthy lifestyle knowledge, practice and capacity within Aboriginal communities in NSW

HEALING is a program designed to support Aboriginal women in making healthier choices around exercise and nutrition for themselves and their families.

HEALING is a 10 week course (2-3 hours per week) incorporating aerobic exercise, Tai Chi and gentle exercise, healthy food preparation & lunch, information on healthy diet and nutrition and healthy weight loss. The program can also be delivered in a 2 day women’s camp setting.

The program was designed and developed by Laurel Rogers, an Aboriginal woman working for North Coast Area Health service and has been running in the north of the state since 2003.

HEALING will be delivered by a network of trained and supported Aboriginal staff within their own communities in 3 NSW regions - Lismore (Northern Rivers), Nowra (Shoalhaven) and Kempsey (Mid North Coast).
